Wine from Sicily

The history of wine has many similarities with the history of Sicily in general. The rich diversity of grape varieties stems from the many peoples that have dominated Sicily throughout history. It all started at the time of the ancient Greeks, who founded settlements on the west and south side of the island and brought grape varieties from Greece and planted them on the island. More and more grapes were introduced to the island during the Roman and Spanish Catalan rule.

Today, the island has many wine regions. Mineral-rich wines from the flanks of Mount Etna, powerful wines from the west near Palermo and Trapani and enormous variety in the southwest. The Nero d'Avola, Nerello Mascalese, Grillo and Carricante are just a few of the beautiful grape varieties that this island has to offer in terms of wine.
