Native grapes

Although Cantine Viola was first founded in 1999 with the sole purpose of saving the Moscato Passito di Saracena from extinction, Luigi Viola, and his wife Margherita realized that this location had more to offer. Soon, they decided to expand their vineyard with vines of the native Magliocco and Montonico grapes.

Organic Magliocco

Rinni is made from Magliocco grapes that are grown close to the village of Saracena, at an altitude of 350 meters. The vines lie in the sun from early morning until dawn, while they are being cooled by a cool winds from the Pollino plateau at night. This creates a microclimate with large temperature fluctuations, making it an ideal location for the production of wines with great diversity in terms of aromas and flavors.

Unknown origin

The Magliocco grape can be traced back to the 15th century, but the exact origin is relatively unknown. We now assume that the grape was first introduced in the area around Arvo, in the North of Calabria. The grape has a relatively thick skin, similar to the well-know Sangiovese and the Savagnin, making it an ideal grape to withstand the sundrenched conditions of the South.

10 months of maturation

The Viola family harvests their Magliocco grapes during the first ten days of October Then, the grapes undergo a cooled fermentation for three days. Afterwards, the grape juice maintains in contact with the skins for another ten to twelve days. The wine is matured for ten months in stainless steel tanks before being bottled. Finally, Rinni is aged for another six months on the bottle.

Harmonious and intense

The result is an elegant, harmonious wine that is well-balanced and intense. It contains complex aromas of clove and black pepper and great minerality from the terroir. This wine combines perfectly with grilled red meat, old cheeses and cured meats like raw ham (prosciutto, or try our Southern variety capocollo). Being made from 100% Magliocco grape, this wine will age well. It can be left alone for another 5 years at least.
