Nonna as inspiration
Although Cantine Viola was first founded in 1999 with the sole purpose of saving the Moscato Passito di Saracena from extinction, Luigi and his wife Margherita realized that this location had more to offer. Soon, they decided to expand their vineyard with vines of the native Magliocco and Montonico grapes.
Guarnaccia & Mantonico
The Viola family uses native Mantonico grapes for Biancomargherita, a wine named after Luigi Viola’s wife Margherita. In this wine 35% of Mantonico grapes are combined with 65% of Guarnaccia Bianca. Mantonico grapes were introduced in Calabria by the Ancient Greeks 2500 years ago when they were imported during the colonization of the South of Italy. Guarnaccia grapes, on the other hand, have a Sicilian origin and are closely related to the French Grenache.
Margherita's character
The Biancomargherita has the same characteristics of nonna Margherita, powerful but tender, complex, and balanced. This inspired Luigi to name his wine after his wife. The grapes are strictly organically cultivated and harvested in the second week of September. Then, the grapes are softly pressed and maintain contact with the skin for about four to six hours. Afterwards the grape must is separated into stainless steel tanks (90%) and barrique (small oak barrels of 225L) (10%), where the wine is matured for ten months. The wine is bottled and then matured for another twelve months on the bottle.
Perfectly balanced
The result is a full-bodied, spicy white wine with a subtle oaky flavor. This juicy wine has an elegant bouquet of bright, green apples and Mediterranean herbs with a long finish of citrus. This mineral wine, that is somewhat reminiscent of a well-balanced Gewurztraminer from the Alsace is a piece of the Mediterranean in your glass. Ideal as an aperitif on a warm summer evening or in combination with fish or white meat dishes.
