The Zumbo sisters (Sorelle Zumbo), Erica and Ramona, are our asset on the north side of Mount Etna in Rovittello, a small village perched on the volcano. Wine is produced on all sides of Mount Etna on the flanks of the volcano, However, because of the microclimate on the north side of Mount Etna, in combination with the mineral-rich volcanic soil, the best wine of the Etna DOC area is produced here. The Zumbo family is one of the pioneers in this field.

Pioneer Salvatore

In 1972, Salvatore Zumbo started an innovative viticultural project, planting one of the first specialized vineyards on Mount Etna, on the Santo Spirito plot, located about 750 m above sea level. Salvatore decided to plant grapes that had grown in these areas for centuries but were not used to their full potential.

14,000 wild vines

Salvatore set himself the goal of bringing back the fame and prestige of Etna DOC wine production, which had been in decline for many years. In the Santo Spirito plot, he planted 14,000 wild vines that he grafted with buds from centuries-old vineyards grown on the slopes of the volcano. At a time when winemakers were leaving Etna, the ambitious Salvatore decided to invest in quality.

Sisters Erica and Ramona Zumbo, proud of the pioneering work of their grandfather Salvatore, have continued the traditional approach of their grandfather with great passion, both in the cellar and in the vineyard. The sisters are supported by two young professional winemakers, who contributed to an even higher quality in recent years.

Enormous potential

Today, Etna DOC is one of the Italian wine regions with the greatest potential. Established Tuscan wineries are now opening subsidiary farms in this area as they too want to benefit from this special terroir. Erica and Ramona's grandfather was one of the first to see this potential, and with his philosophy the Zumbo sisters still produce excellent typical Etna wines today.
