Tenuta Augustea

Marco Vincenzo

Tenuta Augustea is a small winery on the north side of Mount Vesuvius in the village of Somma Vesuviana. Wine was already cultivated here in the time of the ancient Romans, probably because of the fertile volcanic soil. From Naples you can reach this beautiful place in the middle of the Vesuvius National Park in half an hour, where Marco Vincenzo Nocerino produces rare, typical Vesuvian wines.

Villa di Augusto

Behind the winery you will find the Villa di Augusto, where remains of a Roman wine cellar have been found. This was the reason for the Nocerino family to name the winery Tenuta Augustea. The winery has been in the family for four generations. It all started in 1889 when Vincenzo Nocerino started growing grapes on Monte Somma to sell as table grapes to the noble families of Naples. When Mount Vesuvius erupted in 1944, the grape vines were seriously damaged, making the grapes no longer suitable as table grapes.

An instant hit

A lucky accident for us because after the eruption, Vincenzo decided to make wine from the damaged grapes. In order to do so, he built the current wine cellar and production facility. His initiative turned out to be a hit. The wine became extremely popular with the wealthy families of Naples and the beginning of Tenuta Augustea was a fact.

Marco Vincenzo

Today, the winery is run by Marco Vincenzo and his father Angelo, to whom Marco Vincenzo owes his passion for wine making. The grapes of Tenuta Augustea grow on ten hectares of the most fertile parts of Vesuvius between about 200 and 700 meters in altitude and are characterized by mineral-rich flavors. The harvest here is still done by hand and with the greatest attention to detail.
