Aglianico as inspiration

For his red wines, Giuseppe Caggiano only uses Aglianico grapes. The Irpinia region of Campania is famous for its Aglianico, and the increased popularity of this wine region has been going hand in hand with the increased popularity of the grape variety in Irpinia and surrounding regions.

Pioneer of the Aglianico ressurection

Giuseppe and his father Antonio are one of the founding fathers of the resurrection of the Aglianico and currently their wines are known far beyond the borders of the Irpinia region. 30 years ago, Giuseppe and Antonio decided to bring back the classic taste of the Taurasi wines. And that was appreciated very much. Giuseppe has won many prices, including the prestigious “Tre Bicchieri“ in the Gambero Rosso.

Three different Aglianico

The grapes are grown on a terroir of limestone and clay. Due to the late ripening of the Aglianico grape, harvesting happens late in the season, around late October, or even early November. Different fermentation and riping procedures of the Aglianico grape result in three different red wines; the Taurì, de Taurasini and the Taurasi.

8 to 10 months in barrique

After harvesting, fermentation takes place in stainless steel, temperature controlled, tanks. Subsequently, the wine is aged for eight to ten months in barrique (oak barrels of 225L). Depending on the ripening process, the wine is bottled earlier or later. Compared to the more accessible Taurì, this Taurasini wine has gained more complexity from the longer period in the barrel.

Fruity and complex Taurasini

This results in Taurasi’s little sister, the Taurasini, complex wine with fruity aromas and a mouth full of spices, roasted nuts and a subtle hint of licorice. This wine is velvety on the palate with a high concentration of tannins. Don’t forget to open the wine an hour or so before you start drinking it if you want the full experience its character.
