First DOCG in the South of Italy

The Tausasi, affectionately called “the Barolo of the South”, is the absolute star of Giuseppe Caggiano and his father Antonio. Taurasi DOCG was the first appellation to receive the DOCG status in the South of Italy. So, if only because of this fact, it simply cannot be missing at Mezzogiorno.

One of the best Taurasi DOCG

To introduce you properly this this type of wine, we decided to pick one of the best of its kind. This Taurasi is not only immensely appreciated by us, based on the many prices it has won and the countless favorable reviews many agree strongly with us.

Aglianico as inspiration

The unique taste of Taurasi wines and the Aglianico grape was the primary reason for Giuseppe and his father Antonio to start producing their own wines 30 years ago. This fabulous wine was threatened to fall into oblivion when the Irpinia region was severely hit by an earthquake in 1980. Ten years later, Antonio and Giuseppe decided together with a few other local winemakers, to revive the cultivation of wines in this area.

Late harvest

Aglianico grapes are characterized by their late harvesting time, between the end of October and the beginning of November. After harvesting, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel, temperature-controlled tanks. Then the wine is aged for twelve to eighteen months in barrique (oak barrels of 225L each). The be acknowledged as a DOCG, a Taurasi must age for at least three years, of which at least twelve months on oak. Depending on the maturation of the wine in a specific barrel, Giuseppe decides to bottle earlier or later.

Taste explosion of black cherry and forest fruit

Altogether, this results in an icon of Italian wine culture. Its fruity nose is accompanied by an intense and complex taste of black cherries and forest fruits. Due to the long aging in oak, you will also recognize notes of tobacco and leather. This Aglianico wine has a soft and delicate mouthfeel with a high concentration of ripe tannins. The Taurasi is a real top wine with a spectacularly long finale. Don't forget to open (or rather, decant) the bottle a little beforehand. Of course, this type of wine is also ideally suitable to leave in your cellar for the coming years, it will only get better!
