Primitivo di Manduria DOC Riserva

When you say Puglia, you say Primitivo and when you say Primitivo, you say Manduria. Manduria is a small town in the North of the Salento region in central Puglia, close to the Ionian coast. This is the place where the best Primitivo wines come from. Traditionally, Primitivo grapes were mainly used to blend with wines grown in the North of Italy to give them more structure and body. Today however, Primitivo’s popularity is rising because of its unique taste.

70 years old Alberello

This Primitivo di Manduria DOC – Sedici (sixteen) Riserva is grown on 70 years old Alberello vines: free-standing, little trees instead of hanging plants in rows like we see in most vineyards. 3000 years ago, this was the way to cultivate grapes. Today, it is still practiced in very specific places. The method is less efficient, but with Alberello the grapes are sheltered from direct sunlight by the canopy of the small tree. In sun-drenched Puglia this is not a luxury. By protecting the berries against scorching and premature ripening, the grapes are given more time to form sugars. This allows Erario to achieve higher alcohol content during the fermentation process, resulting in a full, structured wine.

The best grapes

For this Riserva, only the best grapes from the best part of the vineyard are selected. By fermenting the grapes for a long period at low temperatures, it is possible to transform more sugar into alcohol. When the fermentation process is finished, the wine is matured for twelve months in stainless steel tanks before it is matured for another twelve months in barrique (oak barrels of 225L). Finally, it is matured in the bottle for another six months.

Riserva

Because a small amount of sugar remains as residue after the fermentation, the high alcohol content of this wine is nicely balanced. The result is a full and warming wine with aromas of ripe fruits, raspberry, and plums great for those Dutch rainy, cold days. This wine is great with meat sauces, braised pork, and grilled red meat. Don’t forget to open this wine a few hours before drinking, because it needs some air to fully express itself.
