Centuries old tradition
In 1972, Salvatore Zumbo started an innovative viticulture project in Rovittello, a small village on the north side of Mount Etna. Here, he planted one of the first specialized vineyards on Etna, on the Santo Spirito plot, located about 750 m above sea level. Salvatore decided to plant grapes that had grown in these areas for centuries but were not used to their full potential.

Old pine tree
Pìnea is named after the recognizable old pine tree in the middle of the vineyard. Ramona tells us that this tree is such a clear landmark, the air force uses it for navigation purposes during flight training. The vineyard contains Inzolia, Carricante and Catarratto, three grapes native to Sicily. The Inzolia, a grape unknown to many, is traditionally used to produce Marsala, but has gained popularity in recent years thanks to its floral and fruity notes. This rare grape is grown in very few places today.
Sicilian grapes
The other two grapes are better known. The Carricante is a grape that is only cultivated on Mount Etna and forms the basis of many Etna whites. The grape does well at high altitudes and is able to take over the mineral-rich terroir of Mount Etna in its flavors. The Catarratto is the most widely used Sicilian white wine grape and is used in many Sicilian wines.

Hand-picked
Pìnea consists of a blend of these grapes. The grapes are picked by hand in the first half of October. Once they have arrived in the wine cellar, the bunches are selected by hand and lightly pressed. After pressing, the wine ferments at controlled temperature and is aged for two months in stainless steel tanks.
Beautiful combination of aromas
The result is a straw yellow wine with hints of green reflections with the fruity character of the Catarratto and Inzolia and the mineral taste of the Carricante. A beautiful combination with aromas of acacia blossom and a juicy and fresh balanced taste of tropical fruit. This wine is ideal as an aperitif, but also very suitable in combination with grilled vegetables or fish dishes.
