Thousends of years

The Negroamaro is, next to the Primitivo, the most famous grape variety from Puglia. Negroamaro means “black bitter” in Italian, although “Amaro” could also originate from the Greek word for black “mavro”. Just like the name, there is a lot of debate about the origin of the variety in this region. Perhaps the grape was brought to Puglia around 3000 years ago by Greek Illyrian colonists, or the grape might have existed even before then, introduced by merchants from the Middle East. One thing is certain, the Negroamaro has a long history in Puglia.

The pure taste of soil and grape

Often, the Negroamaro is used in blends with other varieties. Luigi, the owner of Antica Enotria, doesn’t do many blends. By not blending the grape with other varieties, he is better able to understand the factors in the vinification process that play a part in the development of a specific taste profile. The Negroamaro matures in oak barrels between eight and fourteen months, after which the wine is bottled and left to rest for another six months.

Biodiversity and tradition

Luigi pays a lot of attention to culture and tradition. This is why all his wines are produced organically. The grapes are picked by hand and the fermentation is natural. This means that no yeast is added to start the fermentation process. Furthermore, all stems are carefully separated from the grapes before pressing to avoid woody tannins in the wine.

Limestone and salt

Luigi's organic Negroamaro is grown less than seven kilometers from the Adriatic Sea and the limestone terroir therefore gives a slightly salty sensation at the back of the mouth. This results in a wine that is full in the mouth, enveloping, soft but supported by a pleasant freshness and dense but not aggressive tannins. The Negroamaro is full of fruit and in your glass a bouquet of blackberry, red fruits and vanilla is combined with the traditional spicy character of a Negroamaro. Enjoy this distinctive wine with a lamb chop or with salami antipasto.
