Three different DOCGs

The town Taurasi is situated in the valley of the river Calore. Apart from areas where the Taurasi DOCG is grown, the Calore valley has two other DOCG areas where white wines are cultivated. Only in the region surrounding Taurasi it is possible to cultivate all three appellations: Taurasi DOCG, Fiano di Avellino DOCG, and Greco di Tufo DOCG.

Greek origin

Greco grapes, as one would expect based on their name, are from Greek descent. 25 centuries ago, the South of Italy was controlled by a vast collection of Greek city-state colonies. During these times, the Greeks also took grape varieties to this part of Italy. Greco grapes come in a white and a red variety. The Greco di Tufo is made from the white Greco grape.

Vulcanic soil from Tufo

Giuseppe named his Greco di Tufo Devon and grows his grapes near the small town of Tufo, a few miles from Taurasi. The name Tufo originates from the special type of soil that you can find here. Tufo is a rock that was formed out of volcanic ash. Both the town and the grape variety get their name from this special type of soil.

Late harvest

After harvest in the middle of October, Giuseppe ferments his Greco di Tufo in stainless steel, temperature-controlled tanks. Subsequently the wine is bottled and ripens in the bottle for at least three months before it is sold.

Enjoy thanks to the Greeks

Partly thanks to the ancient Greeks, you can now enjoy this creamy yet fresh white wine. The bright yellow wine brings elements of tropical fruits, peach blossom and almonds. Devon is perfect to store for a couple of years, during which it will develop a more spicy taste. This Greco di Tufo is ideal to combine with a risotto with seafood and fish dishes like tuna shrimp or grilled octopus.
