Donkey
Ciuco means ‘donkey’ in Sicilian dialect. Sicilian is still spoken by large parts of the population. Leonardo, the owner of Costantino, is with his Ciuco part of a trend in Southern Italy that dives into their own past and focuses on culture, nature and history.
Zibibbo from Egypt
This wine is made from 100% Zibibbo grapes. This grape is also called the Moscato d'Alessandria because the grape originally comes from Egypt. The name Zibibbo most likely comes from the Arabic word zabīb, which means raisins. Traditionally, this grape is harvested late to make 'passito', an Italian dessert wine. Nowadays, the Moscato is used in no less than 15 DOCs in Italy, and also produces delicious dry wines.
Organic... naturally
Ciuco, like all Costantino wines, is an organically produced wine. Leonardo explains to us that to him, this is the only way to make wine. He compares using chemicals in farming to taking medication for the body. At a certain point, the body can no longer function without it, he says. And that, obviously, isn’t very good. Add to that Leonardo’s sulfite intolerance and this explains his great passion for organic wines low on sulfites, without unnecessary additives.
Fruity and balanced
This very aromatic wine has a nose of almond blossom and citrus. The sweet notes of exotic fruit are well balanced by sufficient acidity and minerality from the terroir of clay and limestone. Ideal to combine with shellfish or lightly matured cheeses.
