Chapter 1
Capitolo Uno is the top Nero d'Avola by Costantino. Like so many Sicilian winemakers, the Costantino family once started winemaking by cultivating Nero d'Avola grapes. It is the first chapter (Capitolo I) of a family history that currently spans three generations. The grapes for this wine still grow on the same piece of land where Leonardo's father once started with the Nero d'Avola, between Partinico and Monreale.
The black from Avola
The Nero d'Avola was not only the first wine chapter for the Costantino family, in fact this also applies to the island of Sicily. The grape was once, 2500 years ago, brought to Sicily by the ancient Greeks during the colonization of the island. Greek settlements of various Greek city-states appeared all over the Southern and Eastern coasts. One of these settlements was the town of Avola. The grape that the Greeks grew there was locally called “the black of Avola” because of the intense dark color of the wine.
Barrique
Today, this is perhaps the most famous Sicilian grape variety and is extremely popular all over the world. Costantino grows his Nero d'Avola organically on a terroir of limestone and clay and harvests his grapes by hand in the last week of September. The grapes are then fermented in steel tanks for 15 days, after which the wine is aged for three months in barrique (oak barrels of 225L).
Oak, vanilla, locorice and chocolate
This produces a dark red, balanced Nero d'Avola with intense, complex aromas of ripe berries, iris, and spices. The taste is round and balanced with a subtle but present touch of oak, vanilla, licorice and chocolate. The wine is extremely suitable for grilled meat and game, but will also pair very well with stronger cheeses.
