The black from Avola
The Nero d'Avola is a gape native to Sicily. The grape takes its name from the village of Avola in eastern Sicily, hundreds of kilometers from the vineyards of Costantino in the west of the island. The Nero d'Avola has gained in popularity in the 20th century and is now cultivated throughout Sicily. And rightfully so! The 'black of Avola' is praised for its fruity strength and acidity and can be found in almost every red DOC in Sicily.
Greek origin
This full-bodied red wine was once taken to Sicily by the ancient Greeks. Several Greek city-states established settlements all over the Southern and Eastern coasts of Sicily. Siracusa and Agrigento are the most famous remains of this, but Avola, a town just north of Siracusa, was also such a Greek settlement.
Organic... naturally!
Aria Nero d'Avola, like all wines from Costantino, is an organically produced wine. The owner, Leonardo, explains to us that to him, this is the only way to make wine. He compares using chemicals in farming to taking medication for the body. At a certain point, the body can no longer function without it, he says. And that, obviously, isn’t very good. Add to that Leonardo’s sulfite intolerance and this explains his great passion for organic wines low on sulfites, without unnecessary additives.
Almond and cherry
Costantino's Nero d'Avola is slightly spicy and has the characteristic scent of red fruit. The wine has clear notes of almond and cherry, with Mediterranean herbs. Drink this wine with beef stew or meat from the BBQ. Let the wine breath for some time before serving. This wine is also suitable to leave in the cellar for a few more years.
