Close to the sea
The indigenous Catarratto is a grape variety mainly found in Western Sicily, between Trapani and Palermo. Here we find the vineyards of Costantino, not far from the Mediterranean north coast of Sicily. Although this grape is mainly found in Sicily, it is the second white grape in Italy.
From quantity to quality
Because this grape originates in poor Sicily, the Catarratto falls prey to the classic story. In the past, grapes from the south were often used for bulk wine or to use in blends by large wineries in the North of Italy. In recent years, a trend has emerged among small-scale winemakers such as Costantino. A newfound respect for native varieties such as the Catarratto leads to understanding their full potential. And guess what? If the yields of the Catarratto are controlled precisely and the vinification process is treated with the utmost attention to detail, interesting wines are created.
Organic
Aria Catarratto, like all Costantino wines, is an organically produced wine. The owner, Leonardo, explains to us that to him, this is the only way to make wine. He compares using chemicals in farming to taking medication for the body. At a certain point, the body can no longer function without it, he says. And that, obviously, isn’t very good. Add to that Leonardo’s sulfite intolerance and this explains his great passion for organic wines low on sulfites, without unnecessary additives.
Juicy and delicate
The Catarratto produces light, but juicy wines. Aria Catarratto by Costantino has a light yellow color with green reflections. The wine has a delicate floral perfume. It is a fresh wine with fruits such as apple and lemon and with a medium, mineral finish. Delicious as an aperitif or with fish.
