Aglianico as inspiration

For his red wines, Giuseppe Caggiano only uses Aglianico grapes. The Irpinia region of Campania is famous for its Aglianico, and the increased popularity of this wine region has been going hand in hand with the increased popularity of the grape variety in Irpinia and surrounding regions.

Pioneer of the Aglianico-resurrection

Giuseppe and his father Antonio are one of the founding fathers of the resurrection of the Aglianico and currently their wines are known far beyond the borders of the Irpinia region. 30 years ago, Giuseppe and Antonio decided to bring back the classic taste of the Taurasi wines. And that was appreciated very much. Giuseppe has won many prices, including the prestigious “Tre Bicchieri“ in the Gambero Rosso.

Three different Aglianico

The grapes are grown on a terroir of limestone and clay. Due to the late ripening of the Aglianico grape, harvesting happens late in the season, around late October, or even early November. Different fermentation and riping procedures of the Aglianico grape result in three different red wines; the Taurì, de Taurasini and the Taurasi.

4 to 6 months in barrique

After harvesting, fermentation takes place in stainless steel, temperature controlled, tanks. Subsequently, the wine is aged for four to six months in barrique (oak barrels of 225L). Depending on the ripening process, the wine is bottled earlier or later.

Distinct taste of Aglianico

Taurì has the different taste characteristics of the more expensive Taurasini and Taurasi wines and is therefore a nice introduction to the Aglianico grape. The Taurì has the distinctive ruby red color of the Aglianico and a balanced palate with fine tannins. With the Taurì you will find aromas of red fruit and black plum combined with spicy black pepper and green chili in your glass. This wine has a soft taste for an Aglianico and has a nice long finish.
