Olive Oil from Calabria
The coastal areas of Calabria are full of ancient olive trees. Here, in the lower areas, the warm climate is ideal for cultivating olives. As with so many products in southern Italy, the origins lie with the colonization of the ancient Greeks. Besides some grape varieties for wine, they introduced the olive in Calabria.
Today, Calabria is Italy's second largest olive oil region (after Puglia), but much of the produced olive oil is sold to big brands in the north to produce inferior quality industrial olive oil. Fortunately, there are still Calabrian producers who have dared to go their own way. They are now making beautiful oil for very attractive prices.
